General Questions

Are you sane? (Pre-generated characters vs. Player-built characters)

Yes. I realize that lots of people will want to play their own characters, but there are several reasons why DEEP SEKH Tournaments use pre-generated characters.

  • To save time and get everyone playing as soon as possible.
  • To create a diverse environment made up of many unique character class/race combinations.
  • To create a cast of memorable characters that have intertwining stories and relationships.
  • To carefully balance the power of characters and factions against each other to create a fair play environment.
  • To implement as many rules items from the Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game as possible, allowing players to game using races, classes and abilities that they may not otherwise be able to use in other convention or home games.
  • To infuse the game with many strategic elements while avoiding simplistic hack-and-slash gameplay.

Finally, because I have read and used a great deal of the material from my vast D&D library, I have a very good grasp on how all the current rules interact with one another and I have a very fair and consistent method of interpreting them. The playing field is leveled so that even players who are not familiar with a particular rules set are on almost equal footing with players who own and use expansive collections of game rules supplements.

Are you sane? (Pre-generated characters, Number of)

Yes. I give myself about 6 months to create between 50-100 characters. Really, the hard part was designing the character sheet to be easy to read and understand, and that took a year.

This is an awesome game. How can I get involved?

The best way to get involved is to spread the word, share your awesome experiences, and recommend us at conventions you attend. Nothing says lovin' like getting an e-mail asking if I will attend a particular convention to host an event. Being asked to return the following year is a tasty surprise.

As it stands right now, I attend the conventions where I can get complementary registration and rooming (guest status). This is because going to out-of-state conventions can quickly become very expensive when you've got to cover all your own costs. I am willing to cover my own travel expenses, but I do also have a full-time job that I need to schedule around, as gaming does not cover my living needs (food, clothing, shelter, etc.).

Tournament Questions

Can I change things on the character sheet?

No. Each character is intended to be played as-is. However, there may be typos from time to time, which are not intended. Inform an acting judge about a mistake on a character sheet as soon as you spot one. Make sure you follow your spot with a good Knowledge check or, failing that, a proper Search check. If you simply inform a judge of a mistake only to waste some time while a source is checked, you will likely be the target of several save or die effects.

Can I make my own characters for the tournament?

No. I will be implementing a character submission process in the near future, primarily open to individuals that possess an understanding of the character balance within the DEEP SEKH Tournament, and you can of course submit ideas. However, you may not use characters that you built in the tournaments themselves.

All submissions will be received at deepsekh@hotmail.com. Please be patient if you do not receive a reply. Allow at least a week before attempting to resend anything. I have unlimited daily uses of smite annoying.

Can I demonstrate my superior knowledge of the rules to others?

Conditional yes. As long as your demonstration is in the form of winning by the use of fair play and superior tactics and not involve talking other people down or generally reducing the level of fun that others have.

Superiority is encouraged. Bad sportsmanship is grounds for being the target of spells from the Destruction domain.

Can I be a judge?

Refer to Tournament Play for the minimum requirements to be a judge. Demonstrating mastery of the d20 system and a firm grasp on the concepts of reality, strategy, humor and fair play are also basic requirements.
